The Merton Hotel is a popular family hotel in Jersey and the client wished to provide an element of self catered accommodation as an alternative to the sleep-only type existing in the major part of the hotel. Accommodation was designed to be suitable for commercial users in the lower peak holiday season and to also have the ability to be easily converted into residential accommodation in the future.
Plan layout of the rooms creates flexibility with interconnection being possible between arrangements of three rooms at a time. The building is located at the top of Belvedere Hill and is designed to benefit from the mid distance views to the rocky coastline off the south side of the Island of Jersey.
The arrangement of the external balcony decks allows the building to cascade dramatically down the hillside with a strong horizontal emphasis in the detailing that helps to form anchorage into the sloping site.
Roof level brise soleil contribute to the variety of planes that create a visually exciting geometrical combination.
