Graywood Development’s The Mercer is located in an area of Toronto, which the in-force Official Plans designate for redevelopment and intensification, Reinvestment Area District (RA). It is serviced by major public transit on King Street West and a physical underground connection to the PATH System under Metro Hall. The site is also benefited by its close proximity to theatres, restaurants, festivals and other urban amenities.
The tower is designed to emphasize its slender vertical character, reduce the impression of mass and cast a narrow shadow. The height of the tower will blend the heights of the proposed towers on King Street West and Wellington Street with Metro Hall. Through the positioning of the tower on intersection of John and Mercer Streets and the tower’s upper form, the importance of John Street as a “cultural axis” is addressed.
The masonry material of the podium and a portion of the tower and the nine-storey height of the west wing of the building are designed to compliment the adjacent Hotel Le Germain and maintain a consistent street wall on Mercer Street. The podium offers commercial activities in its lower levels, with direct street access and a visual connection between the ground floor interior and the street, to act as an invitation to the public and provide security overlook.
