Playground Market is a temporary urban pavilion located in Plaza Santa Clara in Quito’s Historic Center. Inspired by the site’s former market, whose metal structure was historically linked to Gustave Eiffel, the project transforms the square into a place for play, social exchange, and everyday interaction. Rather than recreating the past, the intervention creates a contemporary dialogue with the historic setting, using architecture to reactivate collective memory and encourage new forms of public life.
The proposal intentionally contrasts with its surroundings. Respect for the historic context does not come from imitation, but from expressing its own time. A lightweight metal structure references the material heritage of the former market while embracing a contemporary architectural language. Its green identity introduces a playful presence that brings new energy to the square without competing with the surrounding heritage.
The pavilion brings together five interactive experiences that encourage exploration, creativity, and social interaction. Musical installations, textile elements inspired by Ecuadorian traditions, educational games, a sculptural slide, and a climbable spatial structure invite visitors of all ages to engage with the space. Modular seating creates comfortable places to rest, gather, and host spontaneous activities while integrating the existing planters into the overall composition.
After sunset, the pavilion becomes a luminous landmark that extends activity into the evening while improving safety and reinforcing the identity of the square. Designed as a fully demountable intervention, it demonstrates how temporary architecture can activate public space, strengthen community life, and reinterpret cultural heritage through a contemporary vision.
