Nine years ago, SLA designed New York City's first cat cafe, Meow Parlour. Over the years, it went from a small cat lounge where kitties roamed freely, to a full non-profit organization working to adopt every feline friend that steps foot (or paw) into the cafe. Their programs expanded including around the clock care for the cats, regular veterinary services, establishing a large fostering network, an annual Cat Camp conference where experts discuss high-need treatments (such as FIV and diabetes), to cat yoga sessions and little kids’ events. Their increase in adoptions include the less desired ones (whether it's three legged cats, black cats or seniors) grew at a rate that exceeded the comforts of their original 800sf space.
The design of the cafe/lounge space is whimsical and playful, perfectly suited for cats to roam, explore and lounge. A 10’ wall of white oak shelves form the letters M E O W, creating an expansive climbing wall. Four large booths with shelves allow for visitor guests to engage with the cats as they explore through the peepholes and shelves.
A second lounge space is lined with a graphic patterned built-in shelf/bench that provides ample display space, while also functions as a maze for the cats to climb, nap and explore. Alternating cubbies form a long bench for their visitors to relax and enjoy the cats. A wooden “tree” in the center of the lounge space is a focal point, where cats can climb and rest in hanging hammocks. Small dedications are provided as "‘leaves“ to the branches.
The storefront has large blocks letters, spelling out M E O W — simultaneously functioning as signage, a playspace for the cats the snuggle in between the leters and as a countertop display. The room is dedicated for cats that need to be isolated (either for medical or social reasons).
Support rooms are provided for veterinary visits, storage and supplies. Increased ventilation is integrated into the design to ensure a healthy environment for both the resident cats and the visitors.
Accompanying all the playing in the lounge space are retail space designed with open shelving punctuated with whimsy wallcoverings. Low basecabinets provide storage and display surface for all the locally sourced, handmade cat toys, clothing and souvenirs. The cafe completes the experience of the visit - comfortable cafe seating is provided as visitors enjoy delicious onsite-baked goods and delightful beverages.
The design of Meow Parlour’s second home is playful, whimsical and supports all the great programs.
