The Oshkosh Southwest Rotary Club sought designs for an observation tower to create a landmark to define the city on the shores of Lake Winnebago, visible from the other communities along the water (Fond Du Lac and Appleton), a new symbol of the city. This tower is a monumental sculpture based on the vocabulary of the industries that have a distinct presence in the Fox Valley:steel, wire, and heavy machinery. The solution bridges the gap between Oshkosh’s present and past by combining the design-oriented city Oshkosh has become and the industries that have made Oshkosh successful. This dichotomy between art and industryis reflected through further dichotomies in the tower. It looks simply like a stairway wrapped around a core from a distance, but the wire envelope is revealed at close proximity. The design dictates the structure, as the structure informs the design. The two are inseparable, which is evidenced and exposed by the design.
