Mendel Residence
Sherman Oaks, CA
5000 SF Main House, 1600 SF Guest House
An AIA Design Award was given for this project which included completely updating and adding a new two story studio guest house to a 1950s ranch-style home in Sherman Oaks. From the street view the house sits low and unassuming. A wood-clad box demarcates the entrance. Once inside, sliding panels of glass open the home to panoramic views of the entire Los Angeles Valley with the Verdugo and San Gabriel Mountains beyond. The entry provides the central circulation for the house and several access points to the outdoors. Natural, custom wood cabinetry contrasts with the polished concrete floors. Accents of a gray palate provide relief from the brilliant Los Angeles sun. The client’s desire for environmental responsibility influenced all material choices, construction practices, solar technologies and lighting and water fixtures. We collaborated with Gus Duffy Architects and Mark Tessier Landscape Architecture on this project.
