This building, and the story behind it, represent much more than great architecture. They are proof that through strong relationships, dedication, and trust, New Jersey Public Schools can hold themselves to higher architectural standards. That despite the difficulties inherent in the design and construction of publicly funded projects, there is still time for architectural inquiry and exploration in search of better facilities for students, teachers, and the communities that unite around them.
Memorial Elementary School is the result of a 20-year relationship between architect and board of education, one in which trust was earned over time; trust that no decision came simply out of architectural inquiry, but rather from deep concern for the benefit of the students’ learning experience. This building was constructed within budget, and completed on schedule, a rarity in itself, let alone for a building that escapes banality.
Every student deserves great architecture. They deserve architects who are willing to spend time exploring design options, and communicating their solutions to those who need to see them along the way.
