Absent monument was a competition proposal for a memorial to Frankfurt’s deported Jews. The memorial is located next to the historical ‘Grossmarkthalle’, from which more than 10.000 Jews were collected and deported to concentration camps.
In the same site the European Central Bank’s new headquarters, a high-rise designed by Austrian architectural firm Coop Himmelblau, will be built. Realizing that it’s impossible to compete with the grandiose high-rise, the proposal Absent Monument does exactly the opposite. By physically "taking away" a part of the river Main close to the Frankfurter Grossmarkthalle we create a void, a space of absence reminding us of the lives that were taken away. The void will make the water fall and change direction as a very direct metaphor for deportation. A square is established on the river bank from which the whole memorial site can be overviewed. The square contains benches for reflection and a large transparent information board. Upon entering the area the visitor will receive a text message on the cell phone linking to other local memorials and relevant websites.
The jury was intrigued by Absent Monument, but in doubt of the feasibility, which is why the project received the Jury’s Special Award. 135 entries from around the world participated in the first phase of the open competition, out of which 20 were anonymously selected for the second phase and further processing. The jury awarded five proposals; three second prizes and two special prizes, which are exhibited in Frankfurt. Only the three second prize winners were allowed to present and explain their projects. During 2011 the Jury will determine the final project.
Absent monument is about deportation and genocide. What happened, happened to ‘mankind’ and has to be reflected, in order not to happen again. After receiving the special prize and being published Absent Monument has experienced a great interest. However we haven’t had the resources to pursue and elaborate further on the project.
Competition Competition is a unique opportunity to prevent Absent Monument turning into a ‘cold case’. Through Architizer the case can be reopened and cause new public attention. By creating a public debate, which involves several local stakeholders and authorities, Absent Monument requires that everybody in Frankfurt makes an effort - which in the end constitutes the ultimate expression of remembrance.
