Medico Express San Isidro: Redefining Human-Centered Healthcare Architecture

Located in Santo Domingo Este, Medico Express San Isidro is an innovative 8,715 m² outpatient center that embodies a Human-Centered Architecture model. This groundbreaking project seamlessly integrates architecture and medicine, rooted in principles like Evidence-Based Design, Neuroarchitecture, Sustainability, Universal Accessibility, and a People-Centered Approach. The center sets a new standard for accessible and empathetic healthcare in the region.

Design Purpose

The primary objective of the design is to create a stress-reducing environment for patients and staff, supporting mental health and promoting wellness. The center is envisioned as a restorative space that fosters positive experiences for all users.

General Concept

Inspired by the natural beauty of the Dominican Republic’s Barahona Province, where sea and mountains coexist in harmony, the design connects users with nature through abundant natural light and organic forms. This creates an empathetic and calming atmosphere, transforming healthcare visits into a more human and uplifting experience.

Key Design Strategies
1. Evidence-Based Design:
All design decisions are grounded in scientific research to ensure safety and efficiency. From the selection of easy-to-clean materials to the use of specialized furniture, every element prioritizes health and hygiene.
2. Neuroarchitecture:
A multisensory design approach reduces noise with acoustic solutions, while a soothing color palette inspired by the sea and mountains evokes calm and positive emotions. This creates an inclusive space for both neurotypical and neurodivergent users.
3. Wellness and Comfort:
Thoughtfully designed spaces ensure privacy and confidentiality for patients while offering ergonomic rest areas and optimized layouts to enhance staff well-being.
4. Sustainability:
Certified, non-toxic, and eco-friendly materials are utilized throughout the center. Natural light enhances user comfort and energy efficiency, while endemic, low-maintenance gardens contribute to water conservation. Handwashing stations and advanced air quality control further promote hygiene and comfort.
5. Universal Accessibility:
The layout ensures accessibility for individuals with mobility or vision impairments, featuring wide corridors, ergonomic seating, and intuitive wayfinding to create an inclusive environment.

The building integrates harmoniously with its urban surroundings, using planters, seating areas, and a central atrium with skylights to create a seamless connection between indoor and outdoor spaces. This design approach promotes a bright, fresh, and welcoming ambiance.
