The interior of the hospital is designed according to the laws of the ‘healing environment’. This concept, based on the natural reactions of people on their surroundings, assumes that patients go through a faster healing process when they are positively influenced by their environment. Pain relief, improved sleeping habits and fewer infections are examples of the positive results of such a healing environment.
Medical Spectrum Twente is a top clinical training hospital with 270.000 patients who need direct care and another 700.000 patients who make use of the state of the art clinical facilities, including a ‘Women-Child centre’ and a Thorax centre. The Medical Spectrum Twente is one of the largest non-academic hospitals in The Netherlands, with branches throughout the Eastern Dutch region in Enschede, Oldenzaal, Haaksbergen and Losser.
The Medical Spectrum Twente aims to be an attractive hospital, by working towards patients’ needs, to be hospitable and offer high quality services and care. The buildings should be pleasant to stay in, for the patients as well as for the staff. To live up to this ambition, IAA Architects designed a plan in which all out-patients care and clinical care will be brought together under one roof, instead of on the two current different locations.
IAA Architects have been working on this design since 2008, a plan which involves a new development of 80.000 m2 in the Enschede city centre and which will be finished in spring 2014.
The design is notable for its ‘comb structure’ buildings, largely covered by a glass cover. This design creates indoor squares, which gives the building an open and light atmosphere.
