In order to meet the needs of Nashville’s rapid growth and increased demand for inpatient capacity, B+MD was engaged by VUMC to develop a master plan to expand the Adult Hospital. With a land-locked campus and limited opportunities for new buildings, several options were considered until B+MD arrived at two proposals to meet the hospital’s strategic goals.
Option A considered vertical expansion of an existing clinic building adjacent to the hospital, and option B was a more ambitious endeavor which required vacating three floors of existing clinics, converting the building to Institutional Occupancy, and renovating for new inpatient units. After a thorough analysis and ROI study, option B was selected, as it met another institutional objective; to decant the hospital campus of outpatient clinics that are better-located off-site.
Each of the three renovated floors are designed with 30 acuity adaptable bedrooms, 7 observation rooms, and additional ancillary spaces to support a range of potential specialties. The renovation also includes major infrastructure upgrades such as a new three-story bridge to connect the new inpatient tower with the existing hospital, along with a new curtain wall facade.
This project is currently under construction; one floor has already been completed and the two remaining floors are expected to be ready for occupancy in 2019.
