This was a 4-person, 3 week group design project with two major 3 objectives: designing a media and information center, redesigning the entire urban square, and designing a component with some performative quality, to be cast out of cementitious material and integrated into the overall design. We heightened the sense of transparency and connectivity between people and spaces on the site by creating level changes and and placing our cone-like component adjacent to circulation spaces, inviting commuters and tourists to become more aware of their surroundings and other people as a view through the component or an unusual angle into the media center catches their eye. We celebrated the media center by raising it up and making the activities within highly visible through the glass walls. The path through the media center is a circuit connected to the speed of the ground circulation, but branching up through the elevator to afford an empowered view of the square and the media displayed on media tables, before descending down the the stairs and back into the square. The pit, a lowered open space for impromptu performances and gatherings, was expanded, and the media center an elevated seating area, flanked by two mural walls, flank either side of it. The pit exists between the media center on one side and the main circulation path and elevated seating/ mural wall on the other, allowing the performers to engage an active audience as well as catch the attention of passerbys.
