Located within Cuyahoga Community College’s Metropolitan Campus in
downtown Cleveland, Media Arts is the conversion of an existing lecture
hall into an innovative film studio and classroom.A new program at the College, Media Arts’ ambition was
to establish a creative and distinguishing image for the program within
the context of the existing architecture. Additionally, the space is a
temporary location for the program, a factor that meant the
installation had to be a low impact solution to the existing structure. The program called for a black box film studio, flexible
classroom, equipment storage and check out areas. From the classroom
(Green Room) unobstructed views of the studio were required while
maintaining acoustical separation. The design is organized as a single bamboo surface that
hovers within, and wraps through a black box. Materials are black,
bamboo, green and versions of clear. Both the single gesture and
material economy maximize the effect of the architectural image,
enhancing its spatial identity. Globally, the surface movements occur
simultaneously in plan and section.A key element in the design, a green carpet “area rug”
is inlaid into the monolithic bamboo surface. The carpet defines a
smaller area within the green room space, creating a casual living room
environment that radically transforms the classroom atmosphere.Integral to the surface are programmatic elements such
as video display, signage, seating and work surface that articulate
localized deformations. A field of voids heightens the sense of motion
in the folding surface while providing for both sound dampening and
return air locations. A quadruple paned glass window faces the studio
for observation during class time, but is able to be isolated via a
full height black curtain during film production. The wood surface
extends from the interior of the space into the adjacent public
corridor. This extension marks the entrance to the space while
activities occurring in the studio are broadcast on a screen embedded
in the surface.
