Perched on an hilltop outcropping above
the main residence this Guest House Retreat mingles with the horizon.
Two existing retaining walls and existing
shallow flat cut pad between dictated the perfect site to place a cantilevered
structure. The upper wall retains ascending slope while the reworked lower wall
forms the side of the pool/pond and also retains steep slope conditions to
support building structure above. An extensive cantilever design tied back into
the slope allows additional area and provides exceptional hovering spatial
qualities.
With a desire to take in 300 degree views
of surrounding canyon and ocean, and float above the property, the owner's
program implied an open steel frame design resting on cantilevered concrete
beams.
Upon this cantilever, back and roof planes
fold creating the "shell" which situates a glass box within to house the
functions of the building as two floor planes slice beyond to create balconies.
The building bisects a zero-edge lap pool
and pond which tie to the ocean views. Glass folding doors hinge away to reveal
interior to exterior further enhancing the connection to beyond. While a very
transparent space, the solid rear of the building faces the only neighbors
allowing the open experience while remaining private. Inhabitants are allowed
to become one with their surroundings.
Created as a place to "get away"
the building embraces all necessary functions to make daily living possible. As
a sanctuary from daily life below this built form provides a place from which
to observe ocean, land and sky.
