In order to minimize the impact of the 18,000 square foot building on the adjacent neighborhood, this concrete and steel structure was designed to be cut deeply into the existing slope. An adjustable canvas and steel shade canopy was inserted along the street frontage to counter the typical image of a maintenance building. This project received the 2002 Honor Award from the Central Valley Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. Photos ©2006 Steve Whittaker/www.whittpho.com
