Atkin Olshin Schade Architects developed a Housing Master Plan for Lafayette College to plan and implement a number of new student housing projects to accommodate the College’s planned increased residential capacity from 2,500 to 2,900 students. The housing master plan incorporates several new buildings in multiple locations both on the campus and in an adjacent neighborhood where the College already owns many houses.
The new construction that resulted from the study meets the needs of the growing college and honors the character of the surrounding neighborhood. The completed work includes two new mixed-use buildings and the renovation of the Portlock Black Cultural Center. Phase 1 was developed by a third-party student housing developer. It includes a new bookstore and college diner at grade and 166 student beds above. Outside, a spacious, landscaped public terrace fronts along McCartney Street.
Phase 2 was completed earlier this year and adds an additional 167 beds and ground floor retail space. Phase 2 is owned and operated by the College, and is built to higher quality standards. The suite-style bedroom apartments include private baths and kitchens in 2 and 4 bedroom arrangements. Common study rooms and lounges adapt to the needs of student residents and allow for the creation of flexible and responsive spaces. The building is constructed of brick and cast stone with gabled, standing seam metal roofs that reflect the materials and residential character of the neighborhood. Phase 2 is LEED Silver Certified.
