Smart Design Studio was engaged by a limited competition to design this visitor's centre for a privately owned, formal garden in Oberon. This visitor centre houses a cafe, gift shop, nursery and ticket/information desk.
As this 20 year old garden is very young compared to the great gardens of the world, the concept that was derived founded on an acknowledgement that all gardens require water, sun, soil and time to grow. Consequently the grass-covered building surrounds a 24m diameter courtyard that is dominated by a large bronze sundial, to remind the visitor of time, throughout the day, seasons and over the years.
The building's environmental design features include using the earth to stabilise temperatures, geothermal healing and cooling, rain and grey water collection and treatment, passive solar design, natural ventilation and a green roof to increase thermal mass and reduce solar heat loads.
