site & condition
This coffee culture space "MAXCUBE" locate in suburban north of Seoul sits community of artists named Heyri Art Village. Architect Seungmin Koo wants to have continuous space with properties from outside and inside through follow time of old with new in a natural environment. The concept is based on minimal design and maximum volume in the role of constructed the cultural town of Heyri. This building extend 50m2 original one which existed on the opposite site and small and old abuts onto a 6m long road by local construction regulations. There is cafe, gallery and handicraft workshop with limit line of structure, 1 story from 6m road surface and no more than 12m tall.
exterior, facade & material
The facade adopted structural frame and module of cast. It is emphasized that south side finished illuminate material diamang of back painted glass but also the others used exposed concrete to visual unity as one mass and keeping a property of matter with naturally color changed by time. This conflicting material and the combination of the laminate surface could be concise read.
plan & elevation
Plane is configured to segment the whole story height and space are collected in one space in the form of upper and lower engagement along the central open space organically. Space on the ground floor passing through from north to south by applying the difference of elevation between the road and site surface was a change in floor height. The story that is entering space with a long canopy and designed according to the original height of the workshop, it's lower level (-600) was located south facing courtyard with an open hole is raising the floor height as possible, considering the views and light, Heyri art village at a glance utilizing the spatial characteristic, located on the hill coming along each dividing part of the visibility angle to accept and integrate as much as possible the views and light was constructed by the elevation of the south side volume.
Interior
Within interior, natural light through the 4.5mx 6.9m size skylight of the central atrium function as integrating the three layers into the organic space and vertical stairs designed in the center of the bridge is open each layer of the space segment to link the dynamic circulation. And also a central open courtyard except for the structural elements of the slab stairs, columns exposed to any space and have a functional internal, external communication and visual scalability.
