Compact and versitle, the Maughan Car Barn consists of a carport, a garage bay that accomodates a drift boat and motorcycles, a work shop, and an enclosed loft and storage area.
The design goal was to provide uncompromised shelter in a rugged mountain environment without requiring electricy for lighting. Strategic opennings in the barn, staggered siding where necessary, and a south facing cleirstory allow light to passively wash the building.
The form of the building responds to the steep adjacent hillside and the tight front set-back. The simple roof sheds snow and rain away from the entry while allowing the cleirstory to catch and distribute day light from the south.
The result is an innovative shelter that challenges the conventional garage.
