Revitalizing Corporate Identity: A Real Estate Investment Company’s Headquarters dubbed ‘The Matrix’
Nestled within a nondescript, light-industrial park amidst the sprawling suburbs of Southern California's Los Angeles, a Real Estate Investment Company’s headquarters emerges as an example of innovation and renewal. As one of many grey concrete shell buildings in a row, the project initially posed a challenge: how to transform a utilitarian structure into a vibrant workplace that inspires communication and fosters a sense of community.
The existing concrete shell, though spacious and equipped with modest skylights and solar panels, lacked the allure and energy required for a modern office. Recognizing the potential to redefine their workspace, the owners sought a design that would not only invigorate the physical environment but also symbolize their forward-thinking approach and commitment to their team.
Cigol Architecture, entrusted with this transformative task, set out to imbue the space with energy and purpose. Drawing inspiration from the building's inherent qualities—stability, size, and longevity—the design team conceived a strategy centered around natural materials and thoughtful craftsmanship.
The programmatic elements included reception areas, conference rooms, private offices, workstation bullpens, a podcast studio, and communal gathering spaces. Central to the design concept was the breakroom, strategically positioned as the heart of the project. Here, a small set of stadium seating and a 15-foot-long whiteboard foster spontaneous interactions and collaboration, invigorating their team spirit. And a variety of solutions were employed for lighting, acoustics, and privacy.
Contrast and Harmony
Central to the design concept was the contrast of natural wood against the industrial concrete backdrop. “The particular wood was intentionally chosen to introduce warmth and texture…a human, livable softness against the starkness of the existing structure” Blair Pettigrew, Principal at Cigol Architecture, explained. The strategic placement and careful detailing of the wood elements created a sense of movement and energy, and the use of light and shadow changed static spaces into vibrant environments.
Creating a Sense of Place
Beyond aesthetics, the design aimed to nurture a sense of belonging and community among the company's long-standing employees. The headquarters needed to be more than just a workplace; it had to be a sanctuary where collaboration thrives and communication flourishes. By integrating spaces that promote interaction and reflection, such as communal areas and quiet retreats, Cigol Architecture ensured that the environment supported both individual focus and collective creativity.
Craftsmanship and Quality
Every detail of the project was approached with meticulous care, reflecting not only the company's commitment to excellence but also its respect for the daily dedication of its employees. The craftsmanship evident in the execution of the wood elements and the overall design layout underscores the project's intention to elevate the daily experience of those who work within its walls.
Looking Ahead
The result is a scheme that transcends its industrial origins, offering a dynamic environment that nurtures creativity, collaboration, and a sense of belonging. As employees step out of the grey parking lot into this revitalized space, they are greeted with an atmosphere that not only meets their functional needs but also inspires and supports the company's vision for the future.
