Materiality playground is the new space that monored designed for Carteco –an architectural materials company, in Athens, Greece which will be a space to present cutting edge products that represents the company’s identity and promote design. The space apart from the exhibition of innovative products, will host events and other exhibitions, a store with books and products of special design quality and a café. The multi-functionalism of the space is addressed with the use of a skin that wraps around the space and is organized with the logic of a gradient flow. The skin functions as a space organizer - it unifies the space as a generic element stressing the diagonal movement, and simultaneously offers locally a specific functionality. In two areas the skin develops morphologically into a bar in the area of the café and into a lounging bench in the outdoor atrium area. The new entryway contributes to the unification of the exterior/public space with the indoor space. It constitutes of an amphitheatrically staircase, which leads the visitor to the level of the main space, connecting the movement of the skin to the outside. The staircase functions also as a seating area creating the possibility to the visitor of a point of pause before entering. The articulation of the skin is achieved with panels that are developed on the surface. The panels are organized on the skin based on the dimension of their aperture, with a gradient flow creating different qualities of space. Via the fluctuation of the apertures, the panels facilitate the needs/uses with a local specificity (displays, bookshelves, lighting coves, ventilation, planters etc) but simultaneously participate organically in the continuity of the skin. The existence of a grid, in a second level, allows the flexibility of creating larger openings, depending on the circumstance of the exhibit. For the efficient production of the skin, the panels are organized in 5 variants - each corresponding to the required needs. The ceiling contributes to the flexibility of the space as well; it is organized in two regions with two different qualities. One side is equipped with lighting rails for more flexibility in order to accommodate the specialized needs of an exhibition space. The other part, above the space of the café and the shop, is light more uniformly, offering a more intimate atmosphere. The border between the two states at the ceiling is realized with a rail; it facilitates to divide the space with a curtain or can be used as an alternate location to hang exhibits.
