The design of the Sidney-Pacific Dormitory at MIT focuses on fostering internal and external communities, through a mixture of unit types. Using a design module fashioned after market-rental residential prototypes, the graduate housing units were designed to be converted to flats should a future need arise. SBA’s flexible design will enable any combination of two or three dormitory units to be modified into one- or two-bedroom apartments.
Natural light floods the upper floors through clerestory windows, which is then diffused through glass-block floors, creating a visual connection between stories, and a bright, inclusive community. An expansive landscaped courtyard further promotes a visual and recreational connection to the community.
At the time of construction, the Sidney-Pacific Dormitory satisfied an urgent need for campus housing. Because of the dynamic relationship between the owner, designer, and builder, the project was completed in an unprecedented 18-months and $1 million under budget. This team assemblage was an early precursor to today’s integrated design process (IPD) delivery method.
