Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) relocated outpatient services to a new facility for better patient-centered care. In collaboration with Perkins & Will, SBA completed interior planning and fit-out for the new Yawkey Center. Sited at the front entrance to the hospital, the Center houses a Cancer Center on three floors, which holds one of the largest chemotherapy infusion suites in the U.S and seven floors of Ambulatory Care services.
In spite of its size, the Yawkey Center is designed to embody a level of warmth and comfort rarely associated with healthcare facilities. The building’s circulation is designed to create a feeling of openness and ease of movement. The main corridors and waiting areas are located adjacent to the exterior walls, which are floor-to ceiling glass on all 10 levels, giving patients an uninterrupted sense of orientation with the outdoors and access to natural light.
The separation between back of house activities (professional and staff work areas) and front of house activities (patient areas) provides patients and visitors with a clear, organized experience. Simple wayfinding tools direct users to the right or left from elevator bays, where they are personally greeted in waiting areas and brought to the appropriate treatment area. Patient processes are re-engineered to ensure privacy, such as individual cubicles for the exchange of any private information.
Glazing used for the windows along the main corridor are designed for visual effects both day and night, from patient views within and from exterior views. Natural lighting and the modulated glass “collage” offer differing levels of opacity for visual interest.
