Mashhad Arrhythmia Center | Architecture of Calmness, Beyond the Architecture of Healthcare
This project was not conceived merely as the design of a cardiac clinic; rather, it emerged from a broader inquiry into redefining the human experience of healthcare environments. A patient entering an arrhythmia center does not encounter only a medical condition, but also a psychological state shaped by uncertainty, anxiety, and vulnerability. Before receiving medical treatment, the patient requires an environment capable of calming the rhythm of the mind. Therefore, architecture was considered as the first layer of healing.
The project originated from a fundamental question:
“Can architecture begin the process of healing anxiety before the physician?”
The response was the creation of an environment that does not evoke the atmosphere of a hospital, but instead recalls serenity, softness, and a sense of security.
Prior to intervention, the project consisted of two completely independent units, with medical functions dispersed across separate areas. The first design strategy was the removal of physical boundaries and the transformation of these fragmented units into a unified spatial entity; an environment where circulation, perception, and function could operate as a continuous and interconnected system rather than a collection of disconnected spaces.
The spatial organization was developed based on the behavioral patterns and physical conditions of cardiac patients. Circulation paths were designed to be short, intuitive, and effortless, minimizing both physical strain and cognitive stress for visitors. The arrangement of treatment rooms, waiting areas, reception, and medical staff zones was carefully considered to reduce circulation conflicts while improving operational efficiency for healthcare professionals.
Within this project, the conventional dominance of orthogonal geometry was reconsidered. Sharp angles, often subconsciously associated with interruption, collision, and tension, were minimized wherever possible. Curved walls, softened edges, and fluid geometries were introduced to create an environment where movement is perceived as continuous and frictionless. Architecture is no longer experienced as a sequence of isolated rooms, but as a calm spatial flow that guides and embraces the user.
Transparency became another fundamental principle of the design approach. Glass partitions that do not extend fully to the ceiling define spatial boundaries while preserving visual continuity. This strategy allows light, perception, and a sense of openness to permeate the entire project, transforming the healthcare environment from an enclosed and stressful setting into a more welcoming and human-centered experience.
The color palette was developed through a restrained composition of neutral and calming tones. Here, color is not treated as a decorative layer, but as an active component of the therapeutic atmosphere. By eliminating strong contrasts and introducing subtle chromatic variations, the visual rhythm of the space is reduced, encouraging a state of psychological balance and tranquility.
The integration of greenery is not merely an addition of plants to the interior; it represents the restoration of nature’s presence within a medical environment. Large-scale, minimalist vegetation elements, combined with the calm material and color palette, introduce vitality into the space while establishing a natural visual equilibrium.
Light, similarly, was approached beyond its functional role as illumination. It became an element that choreographs spatial experience. Linear ceiling lights act as continuous guiding traces, directing movement and establishing a quiet rhythm throughout the interior while reducing visual disturbance.
The project seeks to move beyond conventional healthcare design paradigms, where medical spaces are often defined by sterile whiteness, rigid boundaries, harsh lighting, and institutional character.
Instead, this center attempts to redefine the experience of treatment as something more humane, warm, and emotionally supportive; an environment where architecture becomes a partner in the healing process rather than merely a container for medical functions.
Ultimately, this project is an exploration of architecture’s evolving role within healthcare systems. Here, the building is not simply a place where treatment occurs; it becomes an active participant in the therapeutic process. By replacing the constant reminder of illness with an atmosphere of calmness and dignity, the project demonstrates that architecture, when shaped through a profound understanding of human needs and emotions, can stand alongside medical science in enhancing the quality of care and the overall experience of health.
