Conceptualized as a low-impact residence structured on a steep sloped landscape, the Maryland Hillside House takes queues from the surroundings, nestling into the hillside rather than dominating the peak. The public program of the house moves horizontally across the hillside, while the private program moves vertically, offering sleeping lofts with panoramic views above the tree line. The geometries of the house are prefabricated and flown to the site via helicopter, avoiding construction traffic impacts, and installed in 5 modules upon light pilings to minimize the footprint. RhinoScript was used to automatically calculate the structural members in proportion to length for both the foundation and the wall columns. This allowed great flexibility in geometric possibilities.
