Martin’s Farmstay by Shils Designs
Set amidst the lush agricultural landscape of Mr. Martin’s banana and tapioca farm, Martin’s Farmstay is conceived as a quiet retreat, a place to pause, rest, and reconnect with nature. Designed as a small resting pavilion rather than a conventional building, the farmstay responds sensitively to its rural context, allowing the landscape to remain the primary protagonist.
The design is organized around a generous veranda, which forms the heart of the structure. Supported by traditional columns and sheltered under a sloping terracotta-tiled roof, the veranda functions as a multipurpose space; offering shade, relaxation, and uninterrupted views of the surrounding fields. Planned along both the longer and shorter sides of the structure, the veranda ensures panoramic visual connections to the farm, a key requirement from the client.
From the veranda, the space flows seamlessly into a compact bed space, keeping the built form minimal and efficient. An outdoor kitchenette, specially designed for casual cooking and barbeque evenings, extends the usability of the space while encouraging outdoor living. Services are discreetly integrated and concealed within the structure to maintain visual simplicity and spatial clarity.
The material palette is intentionally restrained and honest. White-painted walls form a neutral backdrop that reflects daylight and enhances the tropical character of the space. The terracotta tiled roof, resting on a minimal steel truss system, lends a familiar vernacular silhouette while ensuring structural efficiency. Flooring alternates between wood-textured tiles and natural stone, grounding the interiors and verandah in tactile, earthy finishes. Minimal wood detailing and UPVC joinery complete the palette without drawing attention away from the landscape.
The architectural language is tropical and minimal, designed to sit lightly on the land. No manicured lawns or formal landscaping were introduced; instead, the existing greenery was left untouched to preserve the raw, authentic character of the farm. In doing so, Martin’s Farmstay becomes an unobtrusive shelter, one that blends into its surroundings, celebrates slow living, and frames nature as the ultimate luxury.
