This new residence for Reid
Martin is nearing the completion of the design stage. It is designed
to take maximum advantage of the clear view of the stunning Columbia River gorge, with a second-floor view porch off the master suite.
It will also take advantage of the sloped site by tucking the garage
partially beneath the house, and locating a deck over the garage. The
deck will be accessible from both ends of the main level, and will be
partially sheltered by a trellis. Additional outdoor spaces and
landscaping will complement the interior spaces, view porch and deck to
provide a variety of settings in which to enjoy the natural beauty of
the site. The open and efficient floor plan was
primarily designed by the owner himself, for which I give him
much-deserved credit. My contributions to the design, honestly, were
minimal - and in this case, I wouldn't have it any other way. I
greatly enjoy working with clients who have such wonderful ideas for
their homes, even if it means my own creativity takes a backseat role. Energy efficiency and solid, lasting
construction are among the owner's top priorities; he is currently
considering using either AAC or Structural Insulated Panels as the
primary building material for the exterior walls, to be finished most
likely with stucco. As a secondary construction system, some of the
second-story walls will be wood-framed and sided with rough-sawn
cedar. These elements combined with the abundance of glazing,
butterfly roof and clean, strong lines give the home a contemporary yet
classic feel.
