Designed with the community in mind, the concept for MLK Public Health Center and its form derive from the idea of a beacon — a source of guidance, help, welcome and inspiration. With its contemporary architectural presence rendered in playful geometric forms and welcoming sidewalk approach the building lead the way in repositioning the entire medical district. The dynamic facade crafted in pre-cast panels and glass, meets the design imperative for a lively, sophisticated building envelope and the construction constraints that included a tight schedule requiring a quick enclosure on the building to meet funding deadlines. Designed with a highly visible, double-height, glass enclosed entry lobby the two-story structure houses conference rooms on the north side of the building. The bold canopy and glass window walls that open onto the pedestrian plaza that can be used as an outdoor space for health fairs and other activities. The wide glass doors are a physical gesture of openness and transparency that reflects the clinic’s philosophy. Other spaces feature clerestory and wide windows that provide pleasant, light filled spaces and views to the outside for the staff and visitors.
By using tilt-up construction for the building frame and fast-track incremental permitting, the team was able to complete the project in 11 months, including design. As a result of this effort, the construction duration was reduced by 69 days and was delivered 20 days ahead of schedule.
