Brief: To create an Australian version of an English garden room at the rear of an existing Federation style brick house.
- The challenge was to create a room with lots of glass that was still suited to the hot climate of australia. We achieved this by reducing the glass in the roof to a reflective glass triangular skylight and the careful placement of external glass in relation to the direction of the sun.
- The room is very light with wrap around glass and a high raked ceiling.
- The room has a faceted floor plan and faceted roof which both evokes a traditional garden room feeling and responds to the unusual shape of the garden. The property boundary changes direction at the rear and turns 45 degrees to the house. The shape of the garden room accommodates this change in geometry in an elegant way.
- The triangular skylight was the house owners idea and it accentuates the shape of the triangular facets of the raked ceiling.
- The room replaces a small laundry and the new laundry was placed in a cute outdoor shed. The other small traditional looking shed was for storage. These sheds complement the form and materials of the main garden room in a positive way and create a private wall to the garden.
- The other great ideas that the owner had were artificial grass in the garden and the bamboo covering the fence. The grass is a surprisingly realistic and nice under foot.
- A welded steel frame forms the strong and stable structure of the room. This allows for lots of glass windows and doors to be placed around the perimeter of the room without compromising stability.
