As a pioneer in luxury golfwear, MARK & LONA continues to redefine conventional sports apparel by transforming it into a personal fashion statement. STUDIO 4/301 translated this core philosophy into architectural language for the brand’s China flagship, drawing inspiration from Japanese minimalism. Following an in-depth study of the Tokyo flagship and close collaboration with Chairman Matsumura’s team, the design deconstructs boundaries between sport and fashion, creating a free-flowing, multifunctional retail environment that harmonizes luxury aesthetics with the kinetic energy of golf culture.
The project site presented several constraints: limited ceiling height due to overhead ventilation ducts and three structural columns that interrupted spatial flow. In response, the design team opened up the entire storefront to enhance visual permeability and introduced a fourth mirrored column to manipulate spatial perception through multi-angle reflection. Suspended between the four pillars, an 8-meter LED dome screen continuously displays real-time weather footage from global golf courses. The interplay of mirrored surfaces and ambient light dissolves the perceived ceiling weight, establishing an immersive, iconic centerpiece.
Inspired by golf course terrain, the floor plan is divided into two experiential zones: the “putting green” area, finished in smooth light-green terrazzo to showcase the "Code" collection, and the “fairway,” rendered in coarse dark terrazzo to house the "Universal" line. Collaborating closely with contractors, the team developed a unique flooring technique embedding both halved and whole golf balls—reinforcing the brand's identity while adding tactile and visual intrigue.
Golf course elements were subtly abstracted into the display system. The central platform features hammered metal that captures the reflective quality of water hazards. Brown leather-wrapped display cases evoke both the hue and texture of sandy bunkers. Slender clothing racks—crafted from 30mm stainless steel pipes tapered to 25mm at both ends—mirror the elegant silhouette of golf flagpoles, stretching floor-to-ceiling to heighten verticality and lightness. The display shelves incorporate adjustable power supply for LED strip lighting and can be configured with hanging rods or display panels as needed, ensuring functional versatility.
To accommodate Mark & Lona’s boldly colored, intricately patterned apparel, STUDIO 4/301 collaborated with specialist coating teams to develop custom stucco finishes. This surface treatment presents a soft matte texture with cloud-like veining, creating a serene yet unified backdrop. The subtle reflectivity contrasts gently with the mirrored columns, enhancing the product’s visual impact while maintaining spatial harmony. The result is a physical manifestation of the brand’s ethos: golfwear as fashion-forward expression.
