A market is inherently sustainable- maintaining local and regional agriculture, accessible via public transport and promoting a multitude of small-scale traders. However, to avoid losing ground to the inevitable threat of supermarket-led global food networks, the market must protect, maintain and build upon its position as a hub in the urban environment. Therefore, this project integrates the institutional, architectural, urban and territorial scales to initiate a sustainable system that operates beyond the individual building. In doing so, it anchors a social and cultural life as a civic hub, it has the critical mass to be a viable alternative to supermarket, it establishes infrastructures that create a local ecology and economy, and maintains regional, sustainable food systems.
