The site of his new headquarters is located at the corner of Little West 12th and Washington Street. There are existing buildings to the North and East, but the South and West are open to the street. It is located in area that has seen a recent surge of new architecture. Most prominently The Standard hotel and the Highline Park. “The garment takes on the shape of the person inside it, and the finished look is always a collaboration between the two.” This quote about Mark Fast, a stretch knit designer of women's clothing, became my concept. The garment or façade should always have a relationship with the body or program volume. The conditions of the site along with Mark Fast’s design vision became my system of organization. The façade opens itself up to the more public space, which is situated at the corner, while being more restrictive in the private space, which along with the core, is located to the North and East of the site. The transition from public to private is not only registered in the façade, but in the spatial experience as well. The structure of the public spaces becomes a volumetric cage of the façade, which manipulates the floor plates as well as the partition walls. The façade wraps the building as a whole, while the cage warps the interior spaces.
