The Marist College Multi-Purpose Academic Building and Student Center Renovation project entailed constructing a new 23,000 SF academic building and renovating the existing 123,000 SF Student Center.
The new Academic Building houses Marist’s robust music department and its 18 vocal and instrumental ensembles, which were re-located from cramped and substandard facilities in the basement of the Student Center. The new spaces rival those of any institution of higher learning and include a spacious Band Room with coffered ceilings and paneled walls with extensive windows; a Choral / Recital Hall with adjustable acoustic banners for a full range of music performances; a suite of practice rooms and teaching suites with plentiful natural light; and ensemble rooms of varying size. Full audio reproduction and video projection systems were designed for the Band Room and Choral / Recital Hall.
Spaces within the renovated Student Center include the Nelly Goletti Theater, student activities space, public areas, and the Dining Hall. The Dining Hall includes a spectacular atrium, student lounges, and an area for quiet dining and studying. Acoustic plaster treatments were strategically incorporated into the Dining Hall to temper the build-up of sound levels.
A particularly challenging aspect of the project was the very aggressive construction schedule, which required much of the work to be completed during Marist’s 2013 summer break.
