We renovated an existing currently unoccupied 2,700 SF community space at 22 Roxbury Street, Staten Island, New York, within a New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) building, into a flexible, multi-purpose community center for multigenerational program opportunities that serve youth and adults from the Mariners Harbor Houses and the surrounding area.
The design approach simultaneously explored opportunities/challenges present at the project location, sought out the input from stakeholders, and looked at what did/didn’t work with other community centers. The center has activities that consist of academic enrichment, social emotional learning, health and wellness, recreation and sports, leadership and civic engagement, college and career exploration, and arts and culture for elementary, middle, and high school participants. Most of these activities are classroom-based activities. Beyond the aforementioned activities and participants, the center will also host activities, workshops, meetings, recreation activities, orientations, meals, etc. for an adult population.
