JCJ Architecture’s approach to this unique and visionary educational facility was to
create a design that reflected our client LEARN’s curriculum, goals and the coastal
site. The school’s design thus reflects a marine science educational theme and the
client’s mission of preparing students for marine-related employment and higher
education and to equip students with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge
through the field study of the fresh water and salt water features.
The building’s small footprint will respect the natural environment by disturbing
as little of the site as necessary. The design treats the students as “apprentice
researchers,” and will connect students to the site’s fresh water pond and salt water
creek. The school will feel like a working marine laboratory. The labs and classrooms
will have visual and physical links to the site, integrating classroom work,
laboratory experimentation and the real physical environment. Outdoor learning
environments that are pedestrian friendly will provide spaces for active learning in
the environment.>
