For the new LEED-Silver certified Margulies Perruzzi Architects offices in the Fort Point area of Boston, we chose 18,000 sf of raw space inside the LEED-Gold certified Boston Children’s Museum building. This location allowed us to create office space that is fully an expression of our firm’s identity and culture, of which a large part is environmentally-friendly design. The design incorporates the following sustainable aspects: 95% of our office equipment is Energy Star rated 45% of materials in our new space were sourced regionally within 500 miles FSC certified wood was used throughout the office design An indoor air quality management plan was created to rid the air of harmful post-construction odors Low VOC-emitting materials such as carpet, paint, furniture and adhesives were used to enhance indoor air quality Green house keeping is used to clean our offices Office location selected due in part to its proximity to public transportation in a high density area Reused office furniture Desk lights at individual workstations are used to control lighting Construction waste was recycledThe design concept is a dynamic intersection of the existing historic mill building’s brick and beam structure with the crisp, clean lines of a modern interior. The materials include glass, stainless steel and bold accent colors, combined with the building’s existing oak beams, columns and sandblasted wood ceiling. In addition, the space offered us the opportunity to integrate completely new, top-of-the-line technology and infrastructure, which is a significant aspect of our approach to design and business. By integrating the most effective, efficient technology resources, we can continue to improve and evolve our design processes and service to our clients. The new space includes private offices, workstations, a main lobby and reception, conference rooms, informal meeting spaces, a staff breakroom and a roof deck that looks over the museum’s green roof onto Fort Point Channel and the Boston skyline.
