MW Architects has recently completed a total redesign and extension of a disused four-storey Victorian building, reinstating it as a spacious, light-filled family home. With a contemporary refurbishment throughout, this 530 square metre house in a Hampstead conservation area has been sensitively updated for 21st century living.
Our clients were drawn to the building’s size, style and location. Although the Victorian room proportions were largely intact, the property was in a state of advanced dilapidation so we needed to build their confidence in our vision of the house’s potential. The challenge was to design a family home that fulfilled the clients’ needs and aspirations whilst retaining as much of the original character as possible. Through rigorous space planning, we set out to open up the circulation at ground level, while a full-width lower-ground floor extension is home to a large play area and ‘party room’.
The centrepiece of our conversion is a sculptural helical staircase. Both smaller and structurally lighter than the original wall-hugging stair, it frees up space to the rear of the ground floor allowing easy circulation between rooms, and improving daylight throughout the house. To the left is a formal living and dining room; to the right a family kitchen/diner.
We obtained planning permission for a ground floor side extension with an enclosed access passage beneath. Although only 1.5 metres wide, it allowed us to re-orient the kitchen, placing it right at the heart of the house, with a kids’ TV den at the front and family dining area to the rear.
Downstairs, we added a 50 square metre rear extension, home to an L-shaped playroom, generous utility room and temperature-controlled, glass-fronted wine cellar. An eight-metre wide uninterrupted sliding glass wall provides access to the landscaped rear garden. We also reconfigured the original space to accommodate a bedroom suite with separate entrance, study, comms room and guest cloak room.
The entire first floor has become a master suite, including a walkthrough shower connecting his and hers bathrooms, an extensive dressing room and study - all bathed in natural light.
By restructuring the roof we were able to include a large playroom within the existing loft space. On the second floor, we created four children's bedrooms, two of them en-suite, along with a large bathroom.
