During the construction of the new administrative building west of Dachauer Street, the MAN Truck & Bus AG decided to extend further and reorganize the entire complex: two new exhibition and distribution buildings should create on the opposite side of the street an urban counterpart to the administrative buildings, the gate to the company site.
In contrast to administrative and training buildings "MAN Truck I Bus Forum" aim as public buildings accessible to customers and professionally interested visitors. The objective of the developers was to create for each product line – truck and bus – their own separate worlds of experience:
"The combination of Branch Competence Center, Brand World and Costumer Center conveys an emotional and authentic brand experience for customers and visitors. The forums are a place to meet, an expression of transparency and openness, a platform for communication and interaction" (quoted from "MAN Forums: The world of commercial vehicles" - MAN Truck & Bus AG).
The formative architectural design element of both forums is the over-arching roof structure that emphasizes the particular access area with free projections of more than 12 m. At the same time, the cantilevered roof panels are tapered to only 50 cm overall height, while the actual hall areas are column-free bridged with nearly 200 cm high steel trusses. The long-span roof structure rests on slender concrete columns with visible decorated steel bearing points; the entrance area is emphasized by the oblique position of columns and façade, allowing again the excessive overhang of the roof. The interior effect of the roof truss can be especially traced to life, where the day-light enters the space trough the precise roof openings and their stainless steel soffits.
The transitions of the tapered roof construction to the sloping soffit of the hall represent a highlight of both forums. The simultaneous bending of the façade creates a selective narrowing in the plan, which is creatively accented by a "fault" within the roof truss and staged according to: the bending and folding of the soffit forms a dramatic accent and increases the tension of the interior. Inside the Truck Forum, the depth of the hall area with its exhibition leads through a decidedly expressive folding in an upstream entrance; in the smaller hall of the bus forum, the convolution is however comparatively softer and receives the cohesive effect of the ceiling.
On a raised gallery level, visitors can proceed through each of the forums; the change of perspective towards the hall level allows an altered view of the vehicles up to 4.0 m high.
While the anthracite hall floor and quartz gravel coating is associated with conventional pavement, the gallery stands out through the stairways with industrial cherry wood parquet. The high-quality wood contrasts with the industrial character of conscious processing.
The ceiling construction of the hall is divided into marginal areas, part thereof anodized aluminium panels of the façade construction and the rest standardized blades ceiling of simpler design. Two-story concrete walls emphasize the more industrial character of the entire hall area, which is refined by deliberately accents of stainless steel and aluminium profile-free glass surfaces, as well as high quality woods.
The center of both brand-specific forums constitutes the so-called "brand worlds": "There is nowhere else You could ex-experience vehicles so close and breathe the atmosphere of the brand as intense as in the MAN brand world. Over 400 square meters area tradition, innovation and vision of our company are summarized in an impressive way. The topics range from Rudolf Diesel's exhaust technologies, driver assistance systems, design studies and alternative fuels to product models and corporate data "(quoted from" MAN Forums: The world of commercial vehicles "MAN Truck & Bus AG).
Changing exhibitions with specific topics in both forums inform about the latest developments in automotive technology. In addition to the trucks with various industry-specific bodies there are presented fully equipped travel and service buses as demonstration vehicles. Despite the considerable sizes of ve-hicle from up to 18 meters, there are a total of 40 to 50 exhibi-tion spaces in the interior and exterior of both forums. Besides the sitting tryout in the cockpit of the newest vehicles, it is possible for customers to drive on the neighboring company's own test track.
Restaurants, a brand shop, a movie theater, an auditorium and a variety of meeting and conference rooms complete the utilization concept. The office workstations, the proposed meeting rooms for consultants, were required in each case ar-ranged in the opposite wing of both forums.
Besides the presentation of brands and products both forums are also serve the transfer of new vehicles to customers. The pick-up appointed and ready-to-deliver trucks and buses will be staged as an experience and the customer is offered an appropriate program:
"An exciting moment: the delivery of your vehicle - the count-down to the start. You have booked your vehicle pick-up at the MAN office. The collection date for your truck or bus and the daily routine has been individually designed and planned for You. Now You can look forward to an exclusive service and straightforward processing of vehicle handover. The tension rises, Your MAN is ready for You. Our staff will professionally advise You as expected "(quoted from" MAN Forums: The world of commercial vehicles "MAN Truck & Bus AG).
From the Gallery of the "Truck Forum" visitors can trace the vehicle handover of new trucks, not being able to enter the arrival hall area reserved for the customer. Through specific exit gates, new owner leaves with "his" new truck finally the hall. The 300,000 € expensive travel buses exit the hall trough the forecourt of the "Bus Forum", a stop next to the brand new vehicles in front of the building allows each a final photo shoot.
Together, both forums form on a road length of almost 400 meters the showcase of the group along one of the most busiest streets of Munich. Especially at night lends itself to passing motorists a good insight into the exhibition areas on a section of the current product range of the company. The color-changing lighting of the building cores forms the atmospheric background of the vehicle exhibitions. Not unjustly titled the Süddeutsche Zeitung in 2010 an article about the finished overall measure of the Dachau road with "The Beautiful New World of Commercial Vehicles".
