Mammoth is a café focussing on good coffee and modern, healthy food. The site is a small wedge shaped tenancy at the corner of Beatty Avenue and Malvern Road, Armadale in a heritage conservation area. The constraints of the floor plan led us to create a sculptural front counter incorporating bar style seating as a focal piece central to the design and also within the space. The triangular floor plan naturally lends itself to interesting nooks, with a variety of seating styles from benches, to banquettes and loose seating.
Early discussions with the client produced reference points including LA/West Coast, surf, Wes Anderson movies and “summer holidays”, with the aim of creating a relaxed, happy space.
Materials include cork and terrazzo on the floors to create a distinction between the 2 rooms. The powder blue terrazzo being one of the clients favourite elements in the design. Joinery and tables feature powder coated metal in navy blue and pastel pink, with American Oak benchtops inlaid with the blue terrazzo. Walls and ceiling were kept plain and simple in white to increase the sense of space and furniture has a light aesthetic in natural timber.
