Mall Galleries in central London functions not only as an exhibition venue, with three main galleries, a bookshop and a café, but also as the home of the Federation of British Artists. This privately funded charity devotes itself to exhibiting contemporary figurative art by living artists working in the UK. It enjoys an extraordinary location on The Mall, which leads to Buckingham Palace.
In order to expand its range of exhibitions, we transformed the East Gallery into a large multi-purpose exhibition space. This was deliberately conceived as a radical and alternative space to the character of the existing Main Gallery. The renovation removed later internal finishes that concealed the true scale of the space. By introducing new roof lights and unblocking windows, the day-lit space now provides a dramatic venue for large-scale exhibitions.
The renovation of the East Gallery was funded by Threadneedle Investments, sponsor of the Threadneedle Prize, one of this country’s most significant prizes for contemporary painting and sculpture. The new gallery provides for greater versatility in the works that can be exhibited.
