Farm Building Renovation

Maison L, Altkirch

Dijon, France

The
 rectangular
 plot
 has
 a
 sloping
 land
 on
 the
 southwest
 topside
 of
 the
 Rebberg
 hill
 in
 Altkirch
 (France)
and
faces
the
rocky
spur
of
the
medieval
city
center.
A
 simple
 and
 compact
 volume
 made
 of
 larch
 wood
 is
 organized
 on
 two
 levels.
 The
 construction
 grows
 in
 length
 against
 the
 top
 of
 the
 hill
 and
 provides
 the
 most
 generous
 view
 is
 possible.
 Only
 the
residential
area
is
in
the
wood
volume;
all
the
associated
uses
of
the
house,
so
as
the
parking
 and
 garden
 shed
 are
 made
 of
 cast
 concrete.
 The
 volume
 of
 concrete
 supports
 the
 north
 road
 of
 the
 plot
 and
 allows
 to
 firmly
 anchor
 the
 wooden
 frame
 on
 the
 slope.
 The
 masonry
 represents
 therefore
a
mineral
case
for
the
wooden
house.
The
 house
entry
is
naturally
enlightened
and
is
coupled
to
the
parking
area;
the
access
to
the
 house
is
located
on
the
top
floor,
just
as
the
rooms.
The
kitchen,
dining
area
and
living
room
are
in
 the
 lower
 level,
 directly
 connected
 to
 the
 garden.
 The
 circulations
 zones
 have
 their
 extremities
 punctuated
by
large
openings.
The
glass
used
in
the
bathroom
and
office
is
treated
by
a
process
 of
frosted
glass
partitions,
guaranteeing
the
privacy
for
who
is
inside.

All
 house
 spaces
 counts
 with
 a
 beautiful
 view
 thanks
 to
 glass
 panels
 of
 all
 widths.
 To
 create
 a
 natural
 sunscreen
 to
 the
 house,
 the
 down
 floor
 facade
 is
 fully
 glazed
 and
 the
 top
 floor
 facade
 receives
a
cantilever.
The
thermal
regulation
is
therefore
very
efficient:
winter
sunrays
come
lower
 and
 can
 penetrate
 the
 house
 (increasing
 approximately
 7°C
 on
 the
 inside
 average
 temperature);

and
summer
sunrays
come
higher
and
are
blocked.

At
 least,
 another
 interesting
 aspect
 of
 the
 house
 is
 that
 the
 wood
 used
 (framing,
 larch
 siding,
 all
 inside
 woodwork
 and
 wood
 windows)
 in
 it
 comes
 entirely
 from
 local
 resources,
 which
 make
 the
 construction
not
only
more
economic
but
also
(and
mostly)
healthier
and
sustainable.
