Forall Studio unveils its latest creation : a brand-new Parisian shrine for Maison Francis Kurkdjian, in the Marais district, at 7 rue des Blancs Manteaux. At last the flagship store can open its doors, its shelves stocked with perfume bottles.
Behind the vintage gate, little remains of the former butcher’s shop (later cabinetmaker’s) that once stood in its place. But the basic look remains the same as before : oak furnishing, waxed concrete incrusted with brass cabochons, golden ledges. This is not the first time the perfume company opens shop in this very location, and Forall Studio also worked its magic here before, when it designed an unexpected pop-up counter in which the perfumer’s identity stood in stark contrast amongst the shop’s bare bones and velvet tarps, back in December 2014.
The architects have set up the perfumes front and center, and have dreamed the space as the perfect setting for Maison Francis Kurkdjian’s precious elixirs, mirrored by the shop’s shelves, niches and light oak chests of drawers --all created exclusively by the studio. The bright gold leaf on the ledges, the gilded brass and the Callacata marble’s golden veining all echo the luminous aspect of the backlit bottles on the hung shelves. The fragrances’ fluidity inspired the design of a long, curved wall, coated with a marble powder plaster. The wall guides the visitor into the store, displays the company’s monogram, and subtly conceals a supporting pole.
The cabochon floor, traditionally found in the Marais’ private mansions, also shares the space’s flexibility : as one goes deeper into the shop, the cabochon pattern fades away. Facing the curly wall, standing on an immaculate floor amidst levitating shelves, the visitor is sublimated, flying on a cloud.
Sight and touch combine with smell in the synesthetic space, where Like prolonged echoes mingling in the distance / In a deep and tenebrous unity, / Vast as the dark of night and as the light of day, / Perfumes, sounds, and colors correspond. *
