Rooting the building in nature by using organic wood and stone materials and blurring the lines between inside and out were guiding principles while designing the new cancer center at MaineGeneral Medical Center. The facility provides comprehensive cancer care by combining radiation and medical oncology treatment, diagnostic imaging, and a multidisciplinary clinic within a single facility. In addition to clinical and administrative areas, space is provided for patient advocates and social workers, along with a great room, resource library, meditation room, caf and retail boutique.
Designed to be environmentally sustainable, the building achieved a LEED Silver rating. With the patient experience in mind, patients can now visit physician offices, treatment and support spaces outside the hospital setting in an environment offering control, choice, privacy, socialization, and a connection to nature.
