Mahoney Lawyers combined a rebranding with their new fitout in Brisbane CBD. Their brief was to take them into 2014 and refresh their environment for staff and colleagues. Their new fitout, within the same building was on a refurbished floor and part of their brief was to feel connected to this base building. With existing hardwood timber panelling to the foyer we were keen to use this element to represent strength and permanence in the fitout.
The other driver for the fitout and outcome was how they would appear to their clients. It was important that the space is interesting and inviting without looking extravagant. The firm is friendly and relaxed and they wanted a home that reflects this.
Our design thinking began with the obvious points of orientation toward the river. The central café was much talked about as the office had not experienced the sharing of this space before and this became the centre piece around which the offices and client areas revolved. It was located ideally, and then layers of materials placed to create the impression of the forest with the timbers reaching to the canopy, the pendants dangling like stars in the sky. The green graphics were inspired by the colour of the new logo and their desire to have some organic type of graphics. The patterns throughout evolved as the leaves of the trees with varying shades of light depending on whether you are in a private or more accessible room.
The other driver for the fitout and outcome was how they would appear to their clients. It was important that the space has integrity without looking extravagant. The firm is friendly and relaxed and they wanted a home that reflects this. Offices vary in size to suit the needs of the different roles, and future growth and modularity is built into this to allow for minimal change if ever required.
The reception was framed by the shades of green directing you down the corridor towards the river view and sets off the the patchwork bolon floor. The flooring was intended to have impact and bring together the palette of finishes. This also allowed the calm of greenery in the space without filling with foliage.
The results far exceeded the boards’ expectations, with a new energy around coming to work and sharing with colleagues. The move has allowed the firm to take advantage of more up to date services, reducing their energy costs, a fresh face that all with remember and a vast improvement in culture and social interaction that they never imagined.
