Our first interaction with this project was when we received a frantic call from the Municipal Corporation requesting us to look into the dilapidated retaining wall of this swimming pool, on the verge of collapse, which protected the entire complex from the fiery waves of the Arabian Sea during the monsoon. Our prognosis would probably have been to undertake an immediate structural repair of the wall; however, after a thorough investigation, it was clear that this swimming pool need a complete makeover rather than just a superficial damage control. First and foremost, the original pool was aligned incorrectly along E-W direction thereby making this pool impossible to host any competitive swimming. The pool raft had severe cracks which resulted in water loss of over 260000 litres per day. The changing rooms were inadequate for the size of the pool and also, the pool was not at all kids friendly with severe safety issue. Within 16 months of its closure, the pool was demolished and, in its place, 4 individual pools were constructed - 1 large Olympic sized pool, a complementary racing pool, a diving pool and an independent children's pool. This complex will probably be the only venue in Mumbai capable of hosting National swimming competitions.
