Mahalia Jackson Pop! Court is a cross-sector effort to reclaim space through community authorship, connecting younger generations to the neighborhood’s rich cultural heritage. Launched in January 2022 and completed in nine months, the project emerged from the shared determination of the community, local government, and private sector to create something meaningful together despite the shoe-string budget. Spearheaded by the Greater Chatham Initiative and supported by a City of Chicago POP! grant, the project transformed a once blighted, 10,000 square foot lot at the corner of 79th Street and the Dan Ryan expressway into a lively public plaza.
KSP worked alongside twenty local artists, contractors, and community partners, to shape a space where colorful art, natural play areas, and local food and music allowed residents to reclaim the heavily trafficked intersection. Together, they flipped the script on the status quo with the firm belief that people deserve to live in beautiful environments shaped by local artists and craftspeople. Together, they created a vibrant neighborhood hub that honors the legacy of the late gospel singer and activist, Mahalia Jackson, who spent her final years in Chatham and continues to reflect the neighborhood’s evolving cultural identity.
