The Mæn Keɪv is a refuge for enjoyment located in a space built underneath the pool of a single-family home, previously used as a storage area.
With a program dedicated to entertainment, the proposal consists of two rooms connected by a Bar, on one side, a TV Room and, on the other, an Informal Dining Room. The design team goal was to create a unique warm, sober and comfortable atmosphere using simple affordable materials.
The palette of earthy, dark tones was achieved by using only 3 finishes: wood, cement and metal. Experimenting with each of them in diverse ways of applications and treatments.
Pine wood was used for furniture and acoustic elements. A wall paneling was designed with a rhythmic modular texture based on horizontal planks of natural pine dyed in 3 different tones with a matte finish. This texture was also used in a pergola hung over the bar, visually connecting both spaces. The fixed bench and the dining room tabletop are made of finger-joint pine boards dyed in the darker tone of the wood palette.
Cement, is utilized in three ways. A cement-based stucco was applied on walls to give the space a raw feel that contrasts against the wood elements. Two custom cast tops were made for the Bar counter and the TV room table. It’s also used in the handmade compressed cement tiles on the floor of the Bar and restroom. While in the TV room, the existing floor material was removed and the original concrete floor was treated and polished.
Metal elements complement the warmth of the wood. The table bases and the bar furniture structures were made in copper-colored metal profiles. While, complementing boxes and shelves were designed and manufactured in iron sheets, carefully rusted to obtain the desired brown tone.
Lighting is a key element for the project and the cozy and dim lighting mood that we wanted to create. Industrial black sconces were placed on walls, as well as indirect light fixtures were installed over the pergola at the Bar.
Previously owned by the family decoration objects were chosen to empathize and complement the pub atmosphere, such as graphic elements and photographs of Winston Churchill placed on cement finish walls. The result is a sober and cozy, yet playful space, that tells a story and invites those that visit it to relax and enjoy.
