The Mactan-Cebu International Airport (MCIA) will be the first of its kind in multiple categories.
The airport will be the first in the Philippines to be privatized under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Model.
Secondly, it is touted to be the World's first resort airport. As a lifestyle destination in itself, MCIA will create the first and last impressions of Cebu for visitors, expecting crowds of up to 5 million international passengers per annum (to expand to 8 million passengers per annum within 10 years) it is the country's second busiest air gateway.
Lastly, MCIA has innovated a construction material never before seen in Asia at this scale. Glue Laminated (Glulam) wood arches support the wave-form roof inspired by indigenous “Bangka Canoes” to cover a total of 65,000m2, making this one of the World's largest supporting structure made entirely of glulam timber.
Aside from the architecture the Mactan-Cebu International Airport will encompass many aspects of Philippine culture. Involvement by local designers will showcase Filipino artistry and craftsmanship. As a resort airport it will also be a complete experience of Filipino hospitality from the moment of arrival.
With the new terminal, the existing regional airport will advance from its function as the gateway to a holiday paradise to an airport in the world-class category. The project fits in perfectly with the government's strategy to promote inclusive and sustainable development in the country through the creation of new infrastructure while keeping a distinctive Filipino aesthetic reflecting the warm-heartedness and friendliness of its culture.
