Mosque as a community centre
We
see throughout the country that our mosques were only fully occupied during Friday
prayers. It is a shameful act where millions of ringgit were spent on a
structure that is used for a maximum of 1 hour a week. We find the building programmed
set by the competition committee is in line with our belief that a mosque
should not be just a place for praying but also a venue for bringing people
together. Islam after all is not just about praying a way of lifeMosque as a symbol of progressive and universal Islam
Islam
is universal, and it does not belong to any particular group of people. It is
customary however that a certain amount of identity is injected into the design
in order to make it exclusive to a particular place. We intend to uphold the
fundamental issue of architecture that is to be truthful to its time and place.
We hope to provide a fresh appearance for this mosque. An architectural icon if
possible. We are truly grateful that we are not prescribed to use a dome on the
structure as a symbol of a mosque and we have no intention to do so. Our
proposal shall be a modern interpretation where functions and performance shall
be given priority
