The Macbeth Hut is the second hut in a series of series of three huts on the Spearhead range, located on Mt Macbeth, in British Columbia, Canada. This is the Spearhead Traverse, a 40km backcountry ski route first completed in 1964, which connects Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain as a popular destination for core alpinists recreationists who want to experience the unparalleled and stunning landscape of Whistler’s backcountry.
This project will create the first linked, hut-to-hut experience on Canada's West Coast, led by The Spearhead Huts Society, a non-profit organization.
MGA has designed the off-grid, 3,500 square foot, 24-guest hut to provide visitors with an inviting, comfortable, and safe shelter, complete with shared cooking, dining and lounge areas, sleeping bunks, and a drying room for gear. This will be a key piece of the backcountry experience, and also serve as a destination for day based ski touring and summer hiking.
The Spearhead Huts will make this piece of wilderness more accessible in a way that respects the land, and addresses the environmental concern that comes with building in the wilderness, utilizing renewable and passive systems to reduce energy demand, low carbon wood structure and interiors, prefabricated Passive House wall panels, passive ventilation, daylighting, and temperature regulation, and minimal excavation and site disturbance. The design of the Macbeth Hut will allow adventurers to leave only footprints and ski tracks on the land.
Construction is estimated to begin Summer 2024.
